Clearfell
Dick Brothers Forestry undertakes clearfell operations of all shapes and sizes and there are no limits to our operational capabilities.
Our vast expertise, experience, and state-of-the-art machinery enables us to fulfil our clients’ demands, no matter the scale or complexity.
Boasting an extensive fleet comprised of a variety of machine types, Dick Brothers Forestry can respond swiftly to increased demands of timber markets by assigning additional machinery to sites as and when required.
Steep Ground Harvesting
With over 25 years’ experience and a range of purpose-built machinery for steep ground harvesting, Dick Brothers Forestry has the ability to harvest and extract timber on even the steepest terrain.
Where tree location and size are considered too physically demanding for machinery, skyline winches and hand-cutters assist harvesters in order to achieve full crop optimisation for our clients.
Our steep terrain harvesters include Tigercat Hill Climbers, John Deere 1470s and Ponsse Ergos, with extractions typically performed using Ponsse Elephants and John Deere 1910s.
Wind Farm Clearance
A rise in awareness of global warming and a drive towards sustainable energy sources has seen the UK increase its onshore wind power production significantly over the past decade. Dick Brothers Forestry is active in providing services for the development of onshore wind farms.
Dick Brothers Forestry completed the largest clearfell operation of its kind for the Little Clyde Wind Farm in South Lanarkshire, a 152-turbine project by SSE which remains one of the largest onshore wind farms in Europe.
Over the course of this 18-month project, Dick Brothers Forestry harvested a total of 220,000 tonnes of timber.
Thinnings
Dick Brothers Forestry offers thinning services to our clients to help them concentrate the volume increase in a smaller number of trees, resulting in wider individual trees and thus a greater proportion of sawlog – the most valuable size class of timber.
Our experienced operators within this niche of forestry services satisfy our clients’ requirements using machines specifically designed for thinning operations, such as the Ponsse Fox and the John Deere 1110E.
